"The Marriageable Girls" by Joyce Banachowski
Marriageable Girls Who Came to New France prior to 1661 This article presents a detailed account of the girls/women who came to New France. Why and how they came to New France is explained clearly. An extensive bibliography accompanies the article. "It was evident that if the colony was to survive, marriages had to be made and families had to be established. In 1627, Richelieu decided to form a large scale company--the Compagnie des Cent Associates (Company of One Hundred Associates)." The Company's recruitment of women is discussed.
"Many of these first women to come were chosen by Madame de La Peltrie, Marie de L'Incarnation, Jeanne Mance and Marguerite Bourgeoys." The role played by these women and others is covered at length. "The term, fille du roi, was not used until twenty five years after the last group came in 1673, and was generally not accepted until 1853, 150 years later. ... The fille du roi have provided approximately 15% of the ancestors of French Canadians today." A detailed list of the girls who came prior to 1661 is included along with parents' names, dates of birth, husbands, etc. Also included with this Volume of the Quarterly is the Annual Membership and Surname List of the FCGW.
