"The Parish" by Joyce Banachowski

"The first clergy and religious groups to come to New France were interested in converting and baptizing the native populations. They set up mission churches to educate and provide religious guidance and medical assistance to the natives. As time went on, they turned to providing these same services to the French population who had come.

"The first religious meeting places were in forts and then in chapels of the religious communities of Quebec, Montreal, Trois Rivieres, and Louisbourg."

"The parish was more than a religious center for our ancestors during the French regime and in French Canada. The parish and not the seigneury was the center of social life." The article proceeds to explain the role of the parish in the daily lives of our ancestors.

The article includes several sections including one on the Cure', the religious leader of the parish. Another section explains the role of La Fabrique - the Vestry. The vestry board was made up of elected marguilliers and former marguilliers. Sections on Pew Rents, the Parish of Montreal, and Parish Celebrations in New France are included. Also included in this issue is a listing of the "Marguilliers of Montreal - 17th through the 19th Centuries." A detailed bibliography follows the article.

An informative article on "The Internet and Genealogy" by Tony Shulist explains some of the pros and cons of genealogy on the web. "Borderlines - Back to Jacques Galarneau - 1642" traces the genealogy of Jacques Galarneau.
