"The Jesuits in New France" by Joyce Banachowski

The religious turmoil in France was reflected in the religious conflicts in New France. Four groups come to New France in the Seventeenth Century: Récollets, the Jesuits, Sulpiciens and the Capuchins. Their main goal was to Christianize the Indian Population. Jesuits seemed more successful, establishing missions in Horonia (11) and Onandaga or Iroquois Lands (10). They also experienced failure. In 1930, Pope Pius XI declared six Jesuits and two lay helpers Martyr Saints.

Jesuit Relations were the yearly letters and reports forwarded to Paris where they were edited and published from 1632 to 1673. They had a great impact in France and helped increase support for the work in New France. The seventy-one volumes are available in French and English. Article - 12 pages and bibliography.
