"Campagnies Franches de la Marine Troupes de la Marine" by Joyce Banachowski

Military companies were sent to Canada to provide protection against the Iroquois and were later sent to other areas of New France (which included Acadia, Louisiana and French posts on the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, inland waters and the interior of North America). There are detailed descriptions of the troops, their daily lives, rations, uniforms, marriage and retirement. The crime rate was low but punishments were harsh by todayıs standards. Soldiers were encouraged to remain in New France after their tour of duty, but many returned to France.

Additional resources include a timeline of military protection and events in New France, a Bibliography, vocabulary list and a list of soldiers sent by Beauharnois and Hocquart in 1734.

"The White Flag of New France" by Joyce Banachowski

This article relates how the blue flag with three fleurs-de-lis of the Renaissance changed into a white flag during the religious wars and into the tricolor in 1790; the symbolism of the white flag is also discussed.
