"The Devotes and their Benefactresses" by Joyce Banachowski
Two groups of women had a major effect on New France's development: the Devotes, inspired by Jesuit writings, and lay women. Ursulines and Hospitalieres were from the educated class. All faced hardships and the threat of the Iroquois to establish convents, schools and hospitals, serving as nurses, pharmacists and educators. They were often at odds with the local Bishop. 18 pages, bibliography, vocabulary and extensive lists of: Members of the Ursuline Order in Quebec ( 1639-1730); Hopitalieres de St. Joseph, Montreal; Superiors of S¦urs de la Charite (Grey Nuns) and the Congregation de Notre Dame CND).
