"Cordonniers, Savetiers et Sabotiers Shoemakers, Cobblers and Wooden Shoe/Clog Makers" by Joyce Banachowski

The first shoes were made by placing your foot on a piece of leather, increasing the outline by a half inch, cutting it out and sewing a softer piece of leather to it. In time, shoes developed and cordonniers provided not only shoes, but boots, slippers, dress up shoes and different styles for men and women. Sabotiers, wooden shoe/clog makers, filled the need for practical footwear in rain soaked mud. Souliers sauvages, native shoes (moccasins) were the choice for the French colonist's common working class.

There are many detailed descriptions of how shoes were made and used, the materials and tools to fashion them and their cost. What did men and women wear inside their sabots? Why were newly shaped sabots stacked in conical piles for several months time? Read this article to find out.

An extensive list of Cordonniers, Savetiers et Sabotiers is provided and includes: name, location, spouse, misc. and source information..
